The cost of routine eye exams and prescription eyewear can be of real concern, especially for large families. In many cases, vision insurance can lower these annual expenses.
A vision insurance policy is not the same as medical insurance. Regular medical health insurance plans protect you against financial losses due to unexpected eye injuries or disease. Vision insurance, on the other hand, is a wellness benefit designed to provide routine eye care, prescription eyewear and other vision-related services at a reduced cost.
AB Health Cuts
Unfortunately, AB Health Care has decided to reduce benefits to our most vulnerable patient populations. We at Aspen Eye Care have decided not to pass on the full impact of these cuts to our seniors and children. Rest assured, those under 19 years of age or 65 and older will still be eligible for routine eye exams at no cost. Below are the list of services that will now incur a charge:
- Additional retinal imaging and visual field testing over the allotted first set (completed on the first assessment if needed).
- A 3rd visit for any reason not initiated by the doctor within the current billing cycle (July 1 to June 30th of any given year)
- An infection or injury that may require multiple follow-up visits (this will depend on how many services have already been used during the current billing cycle).
We understand that this is a difficult time for many who have chronic conditions that require additional care. We want to assure you that Aspen Eye Care is here for you and Dr. Bandali will always do his best to help you navigate these health care cuts. We will always advise you prior to beginning any service if there are charges to be implemented. We will also find ways to work around these fees wherever possible. We would urge you to contact your MLA (as we have) to inform them of your feelings towards these cuts. As a medical eye care provider, we want nothing more than to continue providing full scope service to our patients. Unfortunately, these services come at a cost no longer covered by Alberta Health.
Thank you for always trusting in us to take care of your eyes and your understanding as we work through these challenging times.
Dr. Aleem Bandali
